eMalahleni (until 2006 Witbank ) is a town in the municipality of Emalahleni , Nkangala District , Mpumalanga Province in South Africa . In 2011 it had 108,673 inhabitants. To the west is the township settlement of KwaGuqa , which has more inhabitants than eMalahleni, to the east is the Witbank Dam.
The eMalahlenis economy is based on coal mining and processing. There are 22 coal mines and some coal-fired power plants in the vicinity of the city. The region is about Railroads to the coal loading terminal in the port of Richards Bay leading Richards Bay Coal Line connected.
The first settlers settled on the site of today's eMalahleni in 1890. In 1894 what was then Witbank was connected to the Delagoabahn . The city then grew rapidly, so that it was granted city rights in 1914 .
In 2006 the city was renamed eMalahleni ( isiZulu for 'place of coal').
