Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands . It is located on the main island of Tortola and has about 9300 inhabitants (as of 2010). Road Town has a commercial port and a cruise terminal .

history

Road Town was founded on Road Bay in 1648 as the main town and administrative seat of Dutch settlers. Since the city was repeatedly damaged by fire, the oldest building still standing today dates from 1840.

Attractions

The Botanic Gardens in the center of Road Town impress with their abundance of exotic plants. A circular path also passes an open-air enclosure for tropical birds and artificial waterfalls .

In the deep-water port and the ferry terminal of Road Town many large moored catamarans and yachts that can be chartered for trips to the islands of the Virgins often.

Main Street is home to shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a few colonial-style houses.

Besides tourism , trade is also important. In addition to the commercial port , the financial industry is also of great importance due to the low taxes . The Road Town financial center was ranked 48th worldwide in 2010.
