eNtokozweni ( Machadodorp until the 4th quarter of 2009 ) is a city in the South African province of Mpumalanga . In 2011 the city had 8,835 inhabitants.

geography

The small town eNtokozweni is located in a mountainous area, the Mpumalanga Highlands Meander . The Elands River flows through the village . “ENtokozweni” is a word from the Nguni language and describes a place of joy and support for a child who is just making his first attempts at movement.

For road traffic, the national road N4 is the most important traffic connection. To the west you get to Pretoria and to the east to the Mozambican border. The Pretoria – Maputo railway connects the metropolitan areas of Pretoria and Johannesburg via eNtokozweni and the border town of Komatipoort with Maputo . The regional road R36 leads south to Ermelo and north to Limpopo province . With the R541 can be reached at Lochiel to national road N17 , near the border of Swaziland .

A current problem is the availability of sufficient drinking water for the population, which became precarious at the end of 2012. The township settlements Msogwaba, KaBokweni, Lehau and KaNyamazane are particularly hard hit .

economy

The South African mining group African Rainbow Minerals operates near the city together with Assore Ltd. the Assmang smelting plant, the Machadodorp Ferrochrome Works . The export products are mainly shipped via the Port of Maputo . The plant for the smelting of ferrochrome products was built in 1971 by Feralloys Limited . Since 2010, the Machadodorp Ferromanganese Works has also been producing manganese- alloyed steels.

history

Machadodorp was built in 1894 on the former farm Geluk ("Joy") and named after Joaquim José Machado . This was a military engineer from Portugal who carried out early route reconnaissance work for the later railway route between Pretoria and Delagoa Bay .
The foundation of the town coincided with the opening of the railway station on July 10, 1894.

During the Second Boer War (1899-1902) Paul Kruger declared the place to be the last capital of the independent Boer republics .

In 1971 a steel mill was built in Machadodorp.

Attractions
