Munhango is a city in Angola , in southwestern Africa .

history

Munhango was an important station on the Benguela Railway, which was built in 1899 .

Jonas Savimbi was born here in 1934 . He was the co-founder and leader of UNITA . UNITA was one of the resistance organizations that fought for Angola's independence from Portugal in the Portuguese Colonial War (1961–1975) . After independence in 1975, she fought in the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002) against the ruling party MPLA . After Savimini's death in 2002, the civil war ended.

In the course of the reconstruction after the armistice of April 4, 2002, the Benguela Railway, which was destroyed in the civil war, was rebuilt in sections. In December 2011 the railroad reached Munhango station again.
