Cato Ridge is a place in the metropolitan municipality eThekwini in the province of KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa , which is about 50 km west of Durban and 30 km east of Pietermaritzburg on the main road between these two cities. At Cato Ridge which rises Sterkspruit , located in the dam Nshongweni Dam with the Umlaas (also Mlazi ) combined.

The place is named after George Christopher Cato (1814-1893), the first mayor of Durban. Georgedale, a district of Cato Ridge, is the birthplace of James Mpanza , who became known as the Father of Soweto .

Cato Ridge is on the N3 trunk road and on the main railway line Pietermaritzburg – Durban . This was put into operation on October 1, 1880 by Natal Government Railways and initially only ran to Camperdown , continuous operation to Pietermaritzburg began two months later on December 1 of the same year. In 1921, a new route was put into operation between Cato Ridge and Rossburgh , which, in contrast to the old one, had a maximum gradient of 15 ‰ instead of 33 ‰. Cato Ridge is the terminus of the Metrorail Durban trains on the new main line to Durban .

Cato Ridge is the site of a smelter of African Rainbow Minerals , which began operations in 1959. In it , ferromanganese is produced from manganese ore that comes from mines in the North Cape province .
