Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture

There are 37,000 farms in the district that mainly grow staple foods. The agriculture is mostly done manually by families, with women and children often being used. There are hardly any irrigation systems and because there is little rainfall, droughts often lead to crop failures. On the other hand, heavy rains can also lead to floods, such as in February 2019.

The main crops are sorghum, millet, corn and sweet potato. In recent years, the cultivation of vegetables, especially cabbage, peppers, onions, garlic and tomatoes, as well as sesame and cotton has increased (as of 2014).

Chickens, ducks and goats are bred for personal use, cattle, goats, pigs and sheep are bred for marketing.

Commerce, trade

Small local businesses emerge as an alternative or supplement to agricultural activity. As of 2014 there are 240 commercial establishments, including 87 mills. Ten guest houses with a total of 211 beds are available to guests.

The district's trading network is small, with staple foods such as sugar, salt, soap, and oil being offered by small street vendors.

Natural resources

Mutarara has coal, iron, fluorite, diamonds and limestone in terms of mineral resources.
