Caia is a district of the Sofala Province in Mozambique with the administrative seat in the city of Caia. Its territory borders in the north on the districts of Chemba and Mutara , this in the province of Tete , in the west on the districts of Cheringoma and Marromeu , in the south on Mopeia in the province of Zambézia and in the east on the district of Maringué .
population
The Caia district is 3,585 square kilometers and in 2012 had a population of 135,773 people. This corresponds to a population density of 38 people per square kilometer. The population is very young, over 40 percent of the population are under 15 years old.
Facilities and services
In the Caia district there are (as of 2011) 62 elementary schools ( Primárias) and seven secondary schools (Secundárias). All primary schools are public schools, and two of the secondary schools are private schools. There is no hospital in the district, but there are eleven health stations and six outpatient departments.

Economy and Infrastructure
In 2007 only 1.4 percent of the population had access to electricity, almost half of the population heated with wood.
Agriculture
There are 17,000 farms in the district, with an average of 1.7 hectares of land. The main crops are corn, cassava, beans, peanuts and rice.
traffic
The railway line from Moatize to Beira runs through the Caia district and has a train station in the city of Caia.
There are around 250 km of roads, half of which are in poor condition. There is passenger shipping on the Zambezi River .
