The gloss trogon ( Pharomachrus fulgidus ) belongs within the family of the trogons (Trogonidae) to the genus of the Pharomachrus ( Pharomachrus ).
The bird is found in Guyana , Colombia and Venezuela .
The distribution area includes subtropical or temperate forest, cloud forest , secondary forest and forest edges from 900 to 2500 m altitude.
The Latin type addition means shiny .
features
Upper side and head to neck and upper chest is light green, the underside bright red, the outer tail feathers are black, the underside of the tail white. It is named after the white tips of the male's central tail feathers, which are about a third longer. The beak is yellowish, the feet are brownish to black. In the male, the iris is hazel brown to dark red, in the female it is brown.
The male resembles the golden head trogon ( Pharomachrus auriceps ) and the peacock trogon ( Pharomachrus pavoninus ), but differs through the white tip of the tail and the more gold colored head. The female has less bright plumage and no forehead crest.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- P. f. fulgidus ( Gould , 1838), nominate form - Northern Venezuela
- P. f. festatus Bangs , 1899 - Northeast Colombia in the Santa Marta Mountains
voice
The call of the male is described as a loud "kirra" or "kirra, kip".
Way of life
The diet consists mainly of fruits and berries that are picked from a branch in the tree.
The breeding season is between January and April.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
