Pharomachrus auriceps
( Gould , 1842)

The Goldkopftrogon ( Pharomachrus auriceps ) counts within the family of trogons (Trogonidae) to the genus of Pharomachrus .

The bird is found from Panama south to Bolivia .

The distribution area includes moist temperate forest and forest edges on mountain foothills, rarely cloud forest from 1100 to 2800 m altitude.

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin aurum 'gold' and the Latin cep 'crowned' .

features

The bird is 33 to 36 cm tall, with the male's tail feathers up to 10 cm. The male has a yellow beak, the eponymous golden-bronze-colored head, the upper side and breast are metallic-shimmering golden-green, the underbust to the rump is red, the underside of the tail is black. The upper tail-coverts protrude beyond the tip of the tail.

The best way to distinguish it from the peacock trogon ( Pharomachrus pavoninus ) is through the coloring of the beak and head. It differs from the very similar comb trogon ( Pharomachrus antisianus ) by the black on the underside of the tail and the lack of a comb on the front.

The female is brownish or gray on the head and breast, the tail-covers are shorter, the underside of the tail has small gray-white tips. In contrast to the comb roe, no tail bands can be seen on the underside.

Fledglings have light-colored edges on the arm wings and pale tips on the outer short tail feathers.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

voice

The call of the male is expressed as a melodic, widely audible, raptor-like and 6 to 8 times repeated “whe-wheeu, whe-wheuu, whe-wheeu ...”, neighing “why-dy-dy-dy-dyyrrr”, “hoo -whoooooy ”and plaintive, and plaintive“ ka-kaaaur ”or as owl-like“ ho-ooo, ho-ooo ”.

Way of life

The bird can be found on treetops to medium tree height, also in the hilly open air early in the morning. The diet consists mainly of fruits and occasionally insects . Outside the breeding season, the bird is solitary and quiet. The nest is made in an old tree, the breeding business and feeding are shared by both parent birds. After about 25 to 30 days the brood is fully fledged.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
