Hoya microstemma is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya microstemma is an epiphytic , twining-climbing, perennial plant with slender shoots. The shoots, which are round in cross-section, are sparse and bare. Fresh shoots are flexible, older shoots lignify at the base. Adhesive roots are formed on the underside of the shoots, where they rest on the substrate. The opposite leaves are spread out and have a very short stalk (only about 2 mm). The fleshy leaf blades are elliptical, 2 to 3.3 cm long and 0.8 to 1.5 cm wide in the middle. The apex is blunt, the base is wedge-shaped. The top and bottom are bare. The leaf veins are not prominent, only the midrib is a little clearer.

The umbellate inflorescences contain 8 to 15 flowers. The inflorescence stalks are glabrous and about 4 cm long. The very slender flower stalks are about 0.7 cm long and sparsely hairy. The sepals are ovate-triangular and about 1 mm long. They run bluntly and are sparsely haired with fine downy hair or covered with cilia.

The flesh-colored corolla is wheel-shaped with a diameter of 0.7 cm, the petals are fused in the basal half. The petals are egg-shaped and pointed. The apices are bent back. They are densely covered on the inside with fine downy hairs. The pinkish corolla lobes are elliptical and spread out. They are about 1.5 mm long from the tip of the inner extension to the end of the outer extension. The inner extension is pointed, the outer extension is blunt. The lobes are keeled lengthways at the top, the sides are keeled. The anthers are short, only a little shorter than the inner processes. The pollinia are obliquely oblong with a very small, rhombic corpusculum. The caudiculae are very short. Fruits and seeds are not known.

Similar species

Hoya microstemma differs from Hoya collina and Hoya eitapensis in that it has smaller leaves and flowers.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in Papua New Guinea in the Torricelli Mountains. It grew there on trees about 800 m above sea level. Rudolf Schlechter found it blooming in September 1908.

Taxonomy

The taxon was described by Rudolf Schlechter in 1913 . The holotype was kept in the herbarium of the Botanical Garden Berlin under the number Schlechter # 20190. It is not known whether it still exists. The Plants of the World online database accepts the taxon as a valid species.
