Inga is a genus in the subfamily of Mimosa Family (Mimosoideae) within the family of legumes (Fabaceae). The approximately 350 species thrive in the tropics and subtropics.

Vegetative characteristics

The species of this genus are small to large trees . Their leaves are pinnate in pairs and consist of two to numerous leaflets. Between each pair of leaflets are clearly visible glands along the rachis . The stipules are either small and decrepit or significantly larger and permanent.

Generative characteristics

The flowers have numerous long stamens . The fruits are flat, square or almost cylindrical to cylindrical, straight to curved or spirally twisted legumes , the surface of which is leathery to almost lignified. The seeds are embedded in white pulp.

Inga species thrive almost all over the world in the tropics or subtropics . They are common in Central and South America , with 66 species in Costa Rica alone.
