Inga spectabilis is a species of tree from the subfamily of the mimosa family (Mimosoideae). It is native to Central and South America.

description

Inga spectabilis is a tree up to 15 meters high with pronounced four-way angled branches. The bare leaves are pinnate in two pairs, the leaflets obovate to elliptical. The outermost pair of leaflets is 19 to 30 centimeters long and 8 to 18 centimeters wide, the innermost 10 to 16 centimeters long and 5 to 9 centimeters wide.

The petiole, like the leaf hachis, is winged or cylindrical, with glands between each pair of leaves. The stipules are 6 to 9 millimeters long and almost permanent.

The inflorescences are spikes . The shaft is 3 to 8 centimeters long, the rachis 1 to 5 centimeters long. The flowers are sessile. The woody, flat fruits are up to 70 centimeters long and 8 centimeters wide and bare.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Inga spectabilis is native from Mexico to South America. It is also cultivated for its edible fruits, which are sold as "paternas" in local markets.

Systematics and botanical history

The species was first described by Martin Vahl as Mimosa spectabilis in 1792 and placed in the genus Inga by Carl Ludwig Willdenow in 1806 .
