Konstanty Roman Jelski (1837-1896)

Konstanty Roman Jelski (German: Constantin Jelski or Konstantin Jelski ; French: Constantine Jelski ; born February 17, 1837 in Ljady in the Minsk governorate ; † November 26, 1896 in Krakow ) was a Polish-Russian zoologist , botanist , explorer and curator in Lima and Krakow.

Live and act

Origin and family

His father Konstanty Michał Jelski (1789–1850) was an army captain in the Duchy of Warsaw , his mother Klotylda Moniuszko (1801–1872) the sister of the composer Stanisław Moniuszko . He had eight siblings named Aleksander (1824–1905), Leon Franciszek (1834–1901), Władysław (1835–1875), Konstanty Roman (1837–1896), Adam (1838–1915), Ksawery (1838–1904), Zofia (1829–1912), Maria Stanisława (around 1830–1914) and Michalina Paulina (1840–1930). On October 16, 1883, he married Helena Korsakówna in Krakow. With her he had the children Konstancja, Antoni, Maria and Franciszek.

Early years

After graduating from high school in Minsk in 1853 , Jelski first studied medicine in Moscow for three years . From 1856 to 1860 he studied natural sciences in Kiev , which he completed with a doctorate. His thesis was called Anatomicheskoye issledovanie Lithoglyphus naticoides Fér . Under Karl Fiódorovich Kessler , he was a participant in two scientific expeditions in 1857 and 1858. First he became a teacher at a secondary school in Novhorod-Siverskyj and for natural history at a high school in Kiev. During this time he communicated a. a. with Antoni Waga . From 1862 he took care of the local zoological cabinet as a curator. Since the January uprising began in 1863 , he had to flee abroad from the police. He fled to Turkey via Bessarabia . With the help of a Polish migrant named Wolski, he got a job as a railway official and geologist with the task of exploring the possibilities of iron, copper and coal mines in Asia Minor. So he created geological maps and during this time mainly collected mollusks and insects.

to travel

When he traveled to Paris in 1865, he got in touch with Gérard Paul Deshayes , Jules and Édouard Verreaux and Émile Deyrolle in order to realize his dream of travel. He worked for Deyrolle and in return for a beetle collection Jelski supported him, so that in 1865 he joined the French Navy of French Guiana as a pharmacist . In addition, he accepted a teaching position for agricultural sciences and botany, which enabled him to dry his herbarium .

From Cayenne he undertook shorter trips to the Approuague and to Guisanbourg , to Kourou , to the river Kaw , to Montagne d'Argent , to the Oyapock and its tributary Uassa with a stay in Saint-Georges . In late 1865, Jelski lectured in botany and agricultural sciences at Cayenne College. During a trip to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni , he first made contact with Władysław Taczanowski . Initially his collections went to Paris to Deyrolle, the Maison Verreaux or Edmund Hartnack , until he entered the service of Count Konstanty Grzegorz Branicki (1824-1884) in 1867 and collected a lot of material from Guyana and Peru for his museum.

When he was recovering from a serious illness at the French mission at Oyapock, he decided to move on to Bolivia . During the trip he met Edward Jan Habich (1835–1909), who was on his way to Lima. Jelski decided to go to Lima with him to visit the Italian naturalist Giovanni Antonio Raimondi dell'Acqua (1824–1890). Due to the friendship with Habich and the knowledge that the area around Lima opened up many collecting opportunities, he decided to discard his travel plans regarding Bolivia.

In Peru he collected in Lima, the province of Huanta , the province of Tarma , in Amable María , in the region of Junín , in Maraynioc , in Palca , Pumamarca , in the district of Guadalupe , in the province of Pacasmayo , in Paucal and Nauchod . Out of gratitude to his patron Branicki, he suggested the name for the Pakarana ( Dinomys branickii ) he had collected . In 1874 he became a curator at the State Museum of Nature in Lima , which was based on the Raimondi collection. Since he was collecting for the museum in Lima, he asked Count Branicki to send a replacement for his services. He sent him Jan Sztolcman as his successor, whom Jelski supported with all available information so that he could continue to collect successfully for Branicki. Together with Sztolcman he visited the north coast with Chimbote , Trujillo , Guadalupe and Chepén , then the northern areas with Tumbes , Lechugal , Santa Lucia and the forest of El Palmal, which is part of the Santuario nacional los Manglares de Tumbes , and the province of Cutervo with Chota , the province of Hualgayoc , Tambillo and the province of Jaén .

Since the times under President Manuel Pardo were very turbulent, he returned to Europe in 1878 and took over the position of curator of the Museum of the Physiographical Commission of the Royal-Imperial Society of Science in Krakow (Komisyja fizyograficzna ck Towarzystwa Naukowego Krakowskiego). Although he was familiar with the systematics and biology of animals, and especially birds, he did not have any major publications. After his sudden death, his friend Józef Sowiński published his manuscript Popularno-przyrodnicze opowiadania z pobytu w Gujanie francuskiej i po części w Peru (1865–1871) with popular folk essays on the fauna of Guyana and Peru. He earned an excellent reputation above all as a hard-working collector. Many of the exhibits have been newly described for science by Jean Louis Cabanis , Taczanowski and Sztolcman and many other authors. With Sztolcman, for example, he collected the type specimen of the Taczanowsk hummingbird near Huarango in northern Peru .

Dedication names

Jean Louis Cabanis honored him in 1873 in the name of the Jelskitangare ( Iridosornis jelskii ), in 1874 in the Fahlkehl Erdhacker ( Upucerthia jelskii ) and Władysław Taczanowski in 1883 in the Rostbürzel-Schmätzertyrann ( Silvicultrix jelskii ). The Orbigny dwarf woodpecker subspecies Picumnus dorbignyanus jelskii ( Taczanowski , 1882) and the swallow nymph subspecies Thalurania furcata jelskii ( Taczanowski , 1874) were also dedicated to him. His name can also be found in Metallura jelskii ( Cabanis , 1874), a synonym for the black-bellied glossy tail ( Metallura phoebe ( Lesson, RP & Delattre , 1839)), Xenicopsoides montanus jelskii Sztolcman (1926), a synonym for the white-rimmed leaf scouts -Subspecies Anabacerthia striaticollis montana ( Tschudi , 1844), Empidonomus jelskii ( Sztolcman , 1926), a synonym for the scaly-back mask tyrant -subspecies Empidonomus varius rufinus ( von Spix , 1825) and Spodiornis jelskii ( Taczanowski , 1886) Schieferämmerling ( Haplospiza rustica ( Tschudi , 1844)).

In 1894, Oldfield Thomas described the Ornate Andean field vole ( Abrothrix jelskii ) that Jelski had collected in the Junín region in 1872 . In Mustella jelskii ( Taczanowski , 1881) is a synonym for the long-tailed weasel subtype ( Mustela frenata macrura ( Taczanowski , 1874)). Carlo Emery dedicated the glandular ant species Azteca jelskii to him in 1893 , Gustav Mayr the knot ant species Pheidole Jelskii in 1884 . Edward John Miers gave him 1877 in the shrimp jelskii Macrobrachium , Franz Steindachner 1877 in the Real tetras Type Hemibrycon jelskii , Wilhelm Peters in 1873, the Andean Pfeifffrösche -Art Telmatobius jelskii , Taczanowski 1871 jumping spiders -Art Rhene jelskii , 1872 crab spiders -Art Tmarus jelskii and the True orb weavers -Art Wagneriana jelskii , Frederick Octavius Pickard-Cambridge 1896 mygalomorphae -Art Linothele jelskii , Herbert Walter Levi 1986, the long-jawed orb weaver -Art Chrysometa jelskii , Charles Oberthür 1881, the cutworm -Art Andesobia jelskii , the tensioner -Art Heterusia jelskiaria , the swallowtail butterfly subtype Papilio warscewiczi jelskii , the cutworm type Polia jelskii , 1883, the tensioner -type sabulodes jelskii , Prince Ladislas Lubomirski (1824-1882) 1879 bithyniidae -type Bulimus jelskii , Władysław Polinski 1922 door snails -type Incania jelskii , Hippolyte Crosse 1865 turrid -Art Polystira jelskii and Tomasz Wilhelm Pyrcz 2004 Pedaliodes jelskii the noble butterfly species.

With Jelskia , Taczanowski honored him in 1871 in a new scientific genre, which he introduced for Lyssomanes unicolor and Lyssomanes longipes . Thus, the name was already pre-assigned for Jelskia Bourguignat , 1877 and may not be used today according to the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature .

In 1874, Adolph Eduard Grube described Artemia jelskii , which Jelski had sent from Callao to August Wrześniowski and which is now regarded as a noun nudum .

In addition to zoology, it has been given numerous botanical names. This is how Ignaz von Szyszylowicz , Karl von Fritsch Jun. , Eduard Hackel , Georg Hans Emmo Wolfgang Hieronymus , Carl Christian Mez , Paul Carpenter Standley and Alexander Zahlbruckner described many of the plants he had collected and honored him very often in their descriptions.
