Alexander Zahlbruckner

Alexander Zahlbruckner (born May 31, 1860 in St. Georgen near Preßburg , † May 8, 1938 in Vienna ) was an Austrian botanist who specialized in lichen . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Zahlbr. "

Life

Alexander Zahlbruckner was a grandson of the botanist Johann Zahlbruckner . From 1878 to 1883 he studied at the University of Vienna , among others with Anton Kerner von Marilaun and Julius Wiesner , and received his doctorate with the dissertation “New Contributions to the Knowledge of Lenticelles”. He then assisted under Günther Beck von Mannagetta and Lerchenau at the Natural History Museum in Vienna , where he finally became curator and from 1918 the director of the botanical department. He held this post until 1922.

His numerous publications include the Catalogus lichenum universalis , a 10-volume directory of all known lichens, which appeared between 1922 and 1940 .

In 1918 he received the professional title of Hofrat . In 1928 he became a corresponding member of the Botanical Society of America .

Honors

The lichen genus Zahlbrucknerella Herre and the plant genus Zahleria Luer from the orchid family are named after him .
