The black-bellied gloss tail ( Metallura phoebe ), sometimes also called soot -gloss tail , is a species of bird from the hummingbird family (Trochilidae). The species has a large range that covers about 140,000 square kilometers, in the South American Andean countries Peru and Bolivia . The IUCN classifies the population as “not at risk” ( least concern ).

features

Black-bellied shiny tails reach a body length between 11.5 and 12.5 centimeters. The beak reaches a length of 15 to 17 millimeters. This makes the black-bellied glossy tail larger than most other glossy tail species. In addition, the plumage is much darker than other shiny tails. While the males are almost black, the females are more smoke gray. Their long tail is copper-red. The males have a green-blue spot on their necks, which is somewhat smaller in the females.

Habitat

The bird can be found in mountain bushes and open forests. Among the preferred tree species include the in the Andes existing Polylepis species. You can often see the hummingbird in the Marañón Valley . Populations were seen locally in the intermontane valleys of Pasco and Junín . The bird moves at altitudes between 2700 and 4300 meters. It is believed that the bird is distributed as far as northern Chile . Two older collected specimens probably come from Bolivia.

Subspecies

At the moment, no subspecies of the black-bellied glossy tail are known. The species is considered to be monotypical .

Etymology and history of research

Adolphe Delattre and René Primevère Lesson described the shiny black-bellied tail under the name Ornismya phoebe . The type specimen came from the Cordilleras of Peru and was collected by Delattre during his trip through America. Only later was it added to the genus Metallura .

The word Metallura is derived from the Greek words »metallon μεταλλον « for »metal« and »oura ουρά « for »tail«.

The word "phoebe" refers to " Phoibe ", a titan of Greek mythology .
