The province of Chota is one of the 13 provinces that make up the Cajamarca region in northern Peru . The administrative seat is in Chota .

Geographical location

The province of Chota is centrally located in the Cajamarca region, about 70 km north of the regional capital Cajamarca . It has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of about 15 km and runs across the Peruvian western cordillera . In the east the province extends to the Río Marañón .

The province of Chota borders in the north on the province Cutervo , in the east on the Amazonas region , in the south on the provinces Celendín , Hualgayoc and Santa Cruz and in the west on the Lambayeque region .

Administrative division

The province of Chota is divided into 19 districts. The district of Tambopata is the seat of the provincial administration.

Development of the population

The province of Chota is badly affected by the migration of the Andean inhabitants to the cities on the coast (and to a lesser extent to the Peruvian lowlands). In 2002 the province still had 196,555 inhabitants. In 2017 there were only 142,984.

City festival

The largest festival in the city of Chota is the festival in honor of St. John, which begins on June 24th. Bullfights take place during the city festival.
