The Chalamarca district is located in the Chota Province in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The district was formed on May 23, 1995 from parts of the Paccha district. It has an area of 179.74 km². The 2017 census counted 9134 inhabitants. Ten years earlier the population was 10,539. The seat of the district administration is the 2400 m high village Chalamarca with 721 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chalamarca is located 20 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Chota .
Geographical location
The Chalamarca district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southeast of the Chota province. The Río Llaucano, the right source river of the Río Silaco , flows north along the eastern district boundary .
The Chalamarca district borders in the southeast on the Chota district , in the west on the Conchán district , in the north on the Tacabamba district , in the northeast on the Chadín district , in the east on the Paccha district and in the south on the Bambamarca district .
