The Huambos district is located in the Chota Province in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on February 12, 1821. It has an area of ​​245 km². The 2017 census counted 7,972 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 10,109, in 2007 it was 9,498. The district administration is located in the 2276  m high village of Huambos with 1181 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huambos is 36 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Chota .

Geographical location

The district of Huambos is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the central east of the western part of the province of Chota. The continental divide runs through the district. The Río Chotano , a tributary of the Río Marañón , flows northwest along the northeastern district boundary. The south of the district is drained over the Río Chancay to the Pacific Ocean .

The Huambos district is bordered to the west by the district Llama , on the northwest by the district Querocoto , in the northeast on the district Cutervo ( province Cutervo ), to the east by the district of Cochabamba and in the south to the districts Chancaybaños and Sexi both (in the province of Santa Cruz ).
