River course

The Río Chancay rises in the Western Cordillera , 20 km southwest of Bambamarca at an altitude of about 3750  m . It initially flows 20 km to the west and then turns 30 km to the north. At the town of Chancay Baños , he turns again to the west. The small town of Santa Cruz de Succhabamba is a few kilometers south of the river. From river kilometer 130 the trunk road 6A or 6B (Santa Cruz de Succhabamba - Chiclayo ) follows the river. The Cirato dam ( ) is located on the river at river kilometer 107 . Much of the river water is fed through an underground pipeline to the Carhuaquero I – III ( ) and Carhuaquero IV hydropower plants , which are located on the southern bank of the river at river kilometer 94. The water is then directed to the Carhuaquero V hydroelectric power station before returning to the river at river kilometer 90. At river kilometer 92 the Río Maichil flows from the north into the Río Chancay. At river kilometer 85 there is a dam ( ) on the river. On the right bank branches off a 17 km long canal, which leads part of the river water to the Tinajones reservoir ( Reservorio de Tinajones ). The Río Chancay eventually reaches the coastal plain. At river kilometer 58 a canal branches off to the right above a weir ( ). After about two kilometers, it splits into the more northerly Canal Taymi and the Río Lambayeque . Both channels are used for irrigation and do not reach the sea. The lower reaches of the Río Chancay is also called the Río Reque . The Río Chancay flows mainly in a westerly direction. The city of Chiclayo is 8 km north of the river. The river finally flows into the sea near the small town of Etén .
