The district of Chimban is located in the province of Chota in the region of Cajamarca in northwestern Peru . The district was established on October 21, 1942. It has an area of 145 km². The 2017 census counted 2199 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3111, in 2007 it was 3380. The seat of the district administration is the 1650 m high village of Chimban with 540 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chimban is 40 km northeast of the provincial capital Chota .
Geographical location
The Chimban District is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the northeast of the Chota Province. The rivers Río Llaucano and Río Silaco flow north along the western district boundary , the Río Marañón along the eastern district boundary to the north.
The district of Chimban is bordered to the west by the districts of Tacabamba , Anguía and San Luis de Lucma ( province of Cutervo ), to the north by the district of Pión , to the east by the districts of Camporredondo and Providencia (both in the province of Luya , Amazon region ) and to the south to the Choropampa district .
