The district of Lajas is located in the province of Chota in the region of Cajamarca in northwestern Peru . The district was established on December 29, 1856. It has an area of 120.73 km². The 2017 census counted 11,093 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 13,940, in 2007 12,734. The district administration is seated in the small town of Lajas, 2134 m high, with 2161 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lajas is 48 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Chota .
Geographical location
The district of Lajas is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the southwest of the eastern part of the province of Chota. It has a longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction of 22 km and a maximum width of 11 km. The river Río Chotano crosses the district to the west.
The Lajas district borders on the Chugur District ( Hualgayoc Province ) to the south, the Uticyacu , Chancaybaños (both in the Santa Cruz Province ), Cochabamba and Cutervo ( Cutervo Province ) districts to the west and the Chota District to the east .
