The province of San Miguel is located in the Cajamarca region in northwestern Peru . The province has an area of 2542 km². At the 2017 census, 46,043 people lived in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 56,146. The administrative seat of the province is the small town of San Miguel de Pallaques .
Geographical location
The province of San Miguel is located in the southwest of the Cajamarca region. The province is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The Río Jequetepeque runs along the southern provincial border . The rivers Río Zaña and Río Chamán drain the northwest of the province to the west.
The province of San Miguel borders on the province of Santa Cruz in the north, on the province of San Pablo in the east, on the province of Contumazá in the south and on the provinces of Chepén ( region La Libertad ) and Chiclayo ( region Lambayeque ) in the west .
