The Río Jequetepeque is a 160 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in northwestern Peru in the regions of Cajamarca and La Libertad .

River course

The Río Jequetepeque rises at the foot of Cerro Agopití in the Peruvian Western Cordillera , 25 km southeast of the city of Cajamarca at an altitude of about 3800  m . It initially flows 80 km in a west-north-westerly direction through the mountains, before turning briefly to the south-west and finally flowing to the sea in a predominantly westerly direction. The national road 8 (Cajamarca - Ciudad de Dios ) runs along the river. The river passes the places Magdalena , Chilete and Tembladera . 10 km below Chilete, the Río Puclush flows into the Río Jequetepeque when coming from the north. At river kilometer 50, the Río Jequetepeque is dammed by the dam Gallito Ciego ( ) over a length of about 9 kilometers. The dam is used to irrigate 42,700 ha along the lower reaches of the river, regulate runoff and generate energy. At river kilometer 30 there is a weir ( ) at which two larger irrigation canals branch off to the north. Further smaller irrigation channels branch off further downstream to the north and south. The Río Jequetepeque finally flows 7 km north of the coastal town of Pacasmayo into the Pacific. In the upper and middle reaches of the river bears the alternative names Río Huacraruco , Río San Juan , Río Magdalena and Río Chilete in sections .

Hydrology

The catchment area covers an area of 4372 km². It borders in the north on that of the Río Chamán , in the south on that of the Río Chicama . The river carries very little water during the low precipitation period in the mountains (from June to September). In contrast, during the rainy season (January to April) it carries around 75 percent of the annual runoff. Particularly in years when the El Niño climatic phenomenon occurs, heavy rain events occur in the river's catchment area. Due to excessive deforestation on the slopes of the upper reaches of the river at the end of the 20th century, the Río Jequetepeque carries a particularly large amount of sediment , some of which settles in the reservoir and gradually leads to its silting.
