Only Time ( English for " Nur (die) Zeit ") is a song by the Irish New Age singer Enya . The song is the first single from their fifth studio album A Day Without Rain and was released on November 3, 2000. Only Time only became famous after it was used as background music for the television broadcasts of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .

Only Time is a calm pop ballad . In terms of content, various questions are asked that mainly revolve around the future and love. The answer to all of these questions is "only the time".

Only Time was produced by the Irish music producer Nicky Ryan . The lyrics were written by Enya together with songwriter Roma Ryan .

Music video

The music video shot for Only Time was directed by British director Graham Fink. The video has over 130 million views on YouTube (as of April 2020).

At the beginning Enya sings the song at night in the rain and in a ruin with a grand piano . Shortly afterwards an hourglass can be seen, it changes to day and the ruin fills with sand. Then there is another time change and Enya sings the song between falling leaves. Towards the end it snows, and she is still in the same ruin.

The single cover is kept in the colors white and pink. It shows Enya behind a windowpane covered with raindrops. On the left of the picture there are the lettering only time and enya in red and blue respectively.

Chart successes

Only Time entered the German charts at number 95 on January 8, 2001 . Only after the song was used as background music for the television broadcasts of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , Only Time reached the top of the chart in Germany on October 1, 2001, where it lasted for six weeks. Overall, the song stayed in the top 100 for 26 weeks, including ten weeks in the top 10. In the 2001 German annual charts, the single was second. Only Time reached first place in Switzerland, while it was second and second in Austria ranked 10th in the United States. Enya donated the income from the song to the survivors of the attack victims and the New York firefighters .
