Iona was a progressive rock band from Great Britain .

Band history

The band was founded in the late 1980s by singer Joanne Hogg and musicians David Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge. Before the release of the debut album Iona , other members joined. The album deals with the Scottish island of Iona , to which the band name also refers. Iona mostly deal with Christian-Celtic mysticism, but in interviews the band refuses to be called a Christian band. Iona's former Uillean-Piper Troy Donockley is a declared atheist .

The second album The Book of Kells is a concept album . Some songs on the album are based on pages from the Book of Kells .

In 2006 Iona gave concerts in Germany and Switzerland before the sixth studio album The Circling Hour was released on November 3rd .

On December 11, 2016, the members of Iona announced that they wanted to go their separate ways, at least for the time being.
