Michael Ball (Bishop)

Michael Thomas Ball (born February 14, 1932 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Truro in the Church of England from 1990 to 1997 .

Ball was born as the son of Thomas Ball and his wife Kathleen Ball, b. Bradley, born. He attended Lancing College and studied teaching at Queens' College of Cambridge University . He received his first position in 1955 as a general science teacher at Pocklington School in East Yorkshire . In Pocklington he was also a tutor (house tutor) at the junior boarding house at Lyndhurst School.

In 1960 he gave up his job as a teacher and founded together with his twin brother Peter Ball († 2019), who later became Bishop of Gloucester (1992-1993), in Stratford Park in Stroud in the county of Gloucestershire monastic Congregation Community of the Glorious Ascension , which was initially based in Kelham , near Newark . He taught biology and chemistry at the Marling School in Stroud; until 1975 he was head of the local Lower School. In 1971 he was ordained a deacon ; The ordination followed in the same year . From 1976 to 1980 he was chaplain (Chaplain) at Sussex University . In 1980 he was ordained a bishop . From 1980 to 1990 he was as "Bishop of Jarrow" Suffragan Bishop in the Church of England. At the end of January 1990 he succeeded Peter Mumford as the 13th Bishop of Truro. He was the first bishop in the Diocese of Truro to implement the ordination of women introduced in the Church of England in 1992 . Ball was among the supporters of women's ordination in the Church of England. He retired in February 1997. He was succeeded by Bill Ind .

During his tenure as Bishop of Truro, Ball was Director of Truro Cathedral School (November 1991 – October 1996), the Truro Diocesan Board of Finance (August 1992 – February 1997) and the Epiphany Trust Truro (May 1991 – February 1997) .

Ball wrote the book Foolish Risks of God , an introduction to the religious parables of the New Testament ; the book was published in early 2003.

Michael Ball lives in Somerset .

Membership in the House of Lords

Ball was in his capacity as Bishop of Truro from April 1996 until his retirement in February 1997 as Bishop of Truro as Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords .
