Newark-on-Trent is a city in the east of England, now part of Nottinghamshire , formerly Lincolnshire . In 2001 it had 25,376 inhabitants, together with the closely overgrown neighboring village Balderton 35,674.
history
The place originated at a point where the Roman Fosse Way meets the River Trent . It was first mentioned in 664 and the Domesday Book lists citizens as its residents. In the 12th century, the Bishops of Lincoln built Newark Castle and a bridge over the Trent. In 1549 the city passed from the possession of the bishop to that of the crown. In 1673 she became a borough ( constituency ) with two MPs in the lower house . Agricultural machinery and sugar industries emerged in the 19th century. In 2005, the Newark Torque , a neck ring from the Iron Age , was found on the outskirts of Newark-on-Trent .

- There are numerous old buildings around the large market square, in particular the Maria Magdalenenkirche from the 14th century (some parts older), one of the largest parish churches in England.
- Newark Castle was destroyed in the English Civil War after the siege of Newark . King Johann Ohneland died in the castle in 1216.
