Jayant Desai

Jayant Desai (full name: Jayantilal Zinabhai Desai ; born February 28, 1909 in Surat , † April 19, 1976 in Bombay ) was an Indian film director and producer of Hindi films .

Life

Jayant Desai started out as a projectionist in Surat. In 1929 he came to the Ranjit Film Company , where he was initially employed as an assistant director for Chandulal Shahs Rajputani (1929) and Nandlal Jaswantlals Pahadi Kanya (1930). His first independent directorial work was Noor-e-Watan / Glory of India (1930). Until 1943 he was one of the leading directors at Ranjit Studios and made numerous mythological films such as Veer Babruwahan (1934) with Eddie Bilimoria in the lead role. For his holy film Sant Tulsidas (1939) Ranjit Movitone hired the author Shivram Vashikar and lead actor Vishnupant Pagnis from the successful Sant Tukaram (1936) from the Prabhat Film Company to share in the success of the film genre that was popular at the time. Desai's work for Ranjit Movitone ended with the historical film Tansen (1943). As an independent producer, he shot for his companies Jupiter Films, Jayant Desai Prod. And Hemlata Pics until the early 1960s. He also worked in the film projection and rental business. His best-known works in his own production were the historical film Samrat Chandragupta (1945) about the founder of the Maurya empire Chandragupta Maurya , the Saigal musical Tadbir (1945) and the mythological film Har Har Mahadev (1950) with Nirupa Roy .
