Chandulal Shah

Chandulal Shah (real name: Chandulal Jesangbhai Shah ; born April 13, 1898 in Jamnagar , Gujarat , † November 25, 1975 in Bombay , Maharashtra ) was an Indian film director and film producer .

Life

Chandulal Shah was actually working on the Bombay Stock Exchange when he was asked by a friend in 1925 to work as a temporary director for the Laxmi Film Company. For the " Kohinoor Film Company " he shot Typist Girl in 1926 , the film with which the actress Sulochana became famous. Gunsundari followed suit in 1927, with great commercial success .

In 1929, together with the actress Gohar, he founded his own film company " Ranjit Movietone ", which has been one of the major Indian film companies since the appearance of talkies in the 1930s. Ranjit Studios employed nearly 300 actors (including Nirupa Roy , Motilal and KL Saigal ) and produced films in Hindi , Gujarati and Punjabi .

One of his last directorial work was Acchut (1940), but he was still organizationally active in the Indian film industry. In 1951 he became the first president of the "Film Federation of India".

Chandulal Shah suffered financial losses from activities on the stock exchange and horse racing. He could no longer hold his studios and died impoverished.
