Mike Fisher (born March 13, 1943 in Hollywood ) is a retired American car racing driver and fighter pilot.
Career
Racing driver
Mike Fisher drove a variety of racing cars early in his career. A Lotus 18 in monoposto races, Porsche 906 and 910 sports cars in the SCCA series. When he showed up at the Canadian Grand Prix with a Lotus 33 in 1967 , he caused some astonishment in the professional world. On closer inspection, it turned out that the Lotus with the chassis number R11 was Jim Clark's works car from 1965. The Scot had won the Formula 1 world championship that year in a superior manner in this car . The racing car came into the hands of Fisher through a number of intermediaries. The American drove a respectable race in the two-year-old car and finished 11th at the Mexican Grand Prix , for which he was actually qualified, a petrol pump failure stopped him before the warm-up lap.
Fighter aircraft
The Californian career ended before it really started. Fisher was drafted and had to fight for his homeland in Vietnam . After training as a fighter pilot , Fisher flew combat missions in Indochina with fighter aircraft such as the F-102 , the F-101 and the F-4 Phantom .
After returning from the war, Fisher stayed with the United States Air Force until 1994 . He was still connected to racing, although he no longer actively competed. In 1997 he became Vice President of CART , but resigned after just three years.
