Israil Bercovici (also Israel Bercovici , born 1921 in Botoșani ; died 1988 ) was the most important keeper of Yiddish theater in Romania after 1950. He published plays, Yiddish prose and a history of Yiddish theater in Romania.

Life

Bercovici was born in 1921 into a Jewish working class family in Botoșani, Romania. In 1955 he began to work for the State Jewish Theater in Bucharest as a "literary secretary". He was responsible for the content design of the theater. He always paid attention to a contemporary orientation and thus contributed significantly to the preservation of the theater as one of the last Yiddish theaters worldwide. Bercovici wrote some plays himself, including revues and musicals.

He also published several volumes of prose in Yiddish. His One Hundred Years of Jewish Theater in Romania from 1976 is the most important representation of Yiddish theater and particularly interesting for the time of the beginnings with Abraham Goldfaden .
