Antonio Davis (born October 31, 1968 in Oakland , California ) is a retired American basketball player .
Antonio Davis began his career at the University of Texas at El Paso , where he played for the UTEP Miners . For the Miners he ran 122 times and scored 9.2 points with 6.1 rebounds on average. After Davis was selected in the 1990 NBA Drafts in 45th place by the Indiana Pacers , he moved to Europe, where he was under contract for one season each with Panathinaikos Athens and Philips Milano . In 1993 he moved to the NBA and played for four different teams in the following years. By the end of his career in 2006, Davis had 859 games in which he achieved an average of 10.3 points and 7.6 rebounds. In 2001, Davis was named an NBA All-Star as a player in the Toronto Raptors .
On January 18, 2006, Davis was disqualified in an encounter between his team, the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls , when he went into the stands during the game and fought there with a spectator (Michael Axelrod, son of David Axelrod ). Davis said he was concerned about his wife, who he thought fell over and was attacked by an affected bystander. His wife stated that Axelrod used abusive language in the presence of her child. When she asked him not to do this, he is said to have become personal to her. Axelrod, for his part, said he was attacked by Davis' wife. Davis was banned from the NBA for five championship games due to this incident.
From 2005 to 2006, Davis served as president of the National Basketball Players Association .
National team
With the national team of the United States , Antonio Davis took part in the 2002 World Cup. In front of a home crowd, the team started the tournament with 3-0 victories from the preliminary round and met the national team of Germany , among others . In the second round Davis team lost on September 4, 2002 against Argentina with 87-80. This was the first US national team loss when NBA players were used. Before that, the US had remained unbeaten in 57 games. After losing to the Spaniards in the quarter-finals against Yugoslavia and finally in the game for fifth place , they only achieved a disappointing sixth place in the end.
