Ronald (Ron) Eugene Mercer (born May 18, 1976 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is a retired American basketball player . The 2.01 m tall swingman was active in the NBA from 1997 to 2005 .

NBA

Mercer won the NCAA basketball championship with the University of Kentucky in 1996 . In the 1997 NBA Draft , he was selected by the Boston Celtics in 6th place. At that time, Rick Pitino , his former college coach in Kentucky, took over the coaching position with the Celtics. His former college mate Antoine Walker was also under contract with the Celtics at the time. Together with him and rookie colleague Chauncey Billups , the Celtics were among the youngest teams in the league. Mercer scored a good 15 points per game in his first year and was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Team at the end of the season . In his sophomore year, Mercer established himself as a second force alongside Walker. However, the Celtics did not reach the playoffs in either year.

After two years, Mercer was given to the Denver Nuggets . However, he only played 37 games for Denver before he was transferred to the Orlando Magic . After the season, he left Orlando and joined the Chicago Bulls . With the weak Bulls, Mercer was next to Elton Brand the strongest option in attack and averaged 19.7 points per game. Despite all this, Mercer was transferred to the Indiana Pacers together with Ron Artest in the following season . In return, the Bulls received Jalen Rose . At the Pacers he lost his regular place for the next few years.

In his last two stations with the San Antonio Spurs and New Jersey Nets , he only filled the role of role player. He was released from the Nets on August 15, 2005 and has not found a new team in the NBA since then.
