The Muquiyauyo district is located in the Jauja Province in the Junín region in central western Peru . The 20.6 km² district was founded on October 26, 1886. The 2017 census counted 2374 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2615, in 2007 2399. The administrative seat is the 3342  m high town of Muquiyauyo with 2348 inhabitants (as of 2017). Muquiyauyo is 6 km southeast of the provincial capital Jauja .

Geographical location

The district of Muquiyauyo is located on the right bank of the southeast flowing Río Mantaro in the south of the province of Jauja. The national road 3S (Carretera Central Margen Derecha) from Jauja to Huancayo runs through the district.

The Muquiyauyo district borders in the southwest on the Paccha district , in the west on the Huaripampa district , in the northeast on the Ataura district , in the east on the Muqui district and in the southeast on the Leonor Ordóñez district .
