The Ataura district is located in the Jauja Province in the Junín region in central western Peru . The district was established on March 27, 1935. It has an area of 5.79 km². At the 2017 census, there were 1,352 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 1406, in 2007 1269. The administrative seat is the 3344 m high village of Ataura with 1065 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ataura is 7 km southeast of the provincial capital Jauja . The national road 3S from Jauja to Huancayo runs through the district.
Geographical location
The Ataura District is located in the south of the Jauja Province. It is located in the Andean highlands on the left eastern bank of the Río Mantaro, which flows southeast .
The district of Ataura borders in the southwest on the districts Muquiyauyo and Huaripampa , in the northwest on the districts Sausa , Jauja and Huertas , in the northeast on the district Masma and in the southeast on the district Huamalí .
