The El Mantaro district is located in the Jauja province in the Junín region in central western Peru . The district was founded on October 23, 1921. It has an area of ​​17.9 km². At the 2017 census, there were 2,704 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 2584, in 2007 2612. The administrative center is the small town of Pucucho, 3320  m high, with 2555 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pucucho is 12 km southeast of the provincial capital Jauja . The national road 3S from Jauja to Huancayo runs through the district.

Geographical location

The El Mantaro district is located in the south of the Jauja province. It is located in the Andean highlands on the left eastern bank of the Río Mantaro, which flows southeast .

The El Mantaro district borders in the southwest on the Leonor Ordóñez and Muqui districts , in the northwest on the Huamalí district , in the northeast on the Masma Chicche district and in the southeast on the San Lorenzo district .
