The Apata district is located in the Jauja province in the Junín region in central western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​420 km². At the 2017 census there were 4638 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 6342, in 2007 4956. The administrative seat is the 3340  m high village of Apata with 1282 inhabitants (as of 2017). Apata is 18 km southeast of the provincial capital Jauja .

Geographical location

The Apata district extends across the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the southeast of the Jauja province. The longitudinal extent in NNE-SSW direction is about 42 km. The Río Tambillo, a left tributary of the Río Tulumayo , flows through the northern part of the district in a northerly direction.

The Apata district borders in the southwest with the districts of San Lorenzo and Masma Chicche , in the west with the Molinos district , in the northeast with the Monobamba district , in the east with the Comas district and in the south with the Heroínas Toledo , Santa Rosa de Ocopa and Matahuasi districts (the last four districts mentioned are in the province of Concepción ).
