action

1st act

Three artists live together on a budget in the Paris district of Montmartre: the painter Raoul, the composer Florimond and the writer Henri. First of all, his lover Ninon stands for the painter for a picture of the Aprodite Model. They get into an argument and split up. Violetta also loves the painter, but does not show this openly. Since nobody has any money, she moves a medallion to buy food. A bailiff appears, but does not want to impound anything, but brings a large sum of money, which was given to the artists by a patron. The three artists use the unexpected windfall to buy Violetta out of her dependency on her guardian.

2nd act

Ninon has won a new friend and patron, the Art Minister Pipo de Frascati. With his support, she has become a well-known vaudeville singer. She still loves the painter Raoul and is near him. Violetta gets the minister to get Raoul to work as a restorer at the Louvre . However, thanks to Ninon for their help. The trio of artists are relieved of repeated financial worries and bailiffs when Florimond's latest operetta is accepted.

3rd act

Florimond's operetta has become a great success. Ninon is the award-winning singer of the evening. When she receives a suicide note from Raoul, she leaves the theater angrily. Violetta takes on her role and saves the performance. Meanwhile a Baron Rothschild inquires about the seller of the medallion. He reveals to Violetta that she is a Countess Bernini and that she has a lot of money. Violetta and Raoul are finally getting together.

Trivia

"Das Veilchen vom Montmartre" is seldom played in German-speaking countries. This operetta is often not included in common operetta dictionaries. Only the song “I dreamed of you today” has remained known, as it is often used in another operetta by Kálmán, the “ Csárdásfürstin ”. Accordingly, there are also some recordings of this song.

In other countries such as Russia, Ukraine or Hungary the operetta is still on the repertoire. In 1988 the work was filmed for Hungarian television.
