Josef Holzer (conductor)

Josef Holzer (born December 20, 1881 in Budapest , † June 13, 1946 in Hilversum , Netherlands ) was an Austrian conductor and composer .

Life

Josef Holzer received his musical training at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna . From 1905 to 1927 he was a conductor at the Carltheater , where he directed numerous world premieres of well-known operettas . From 1928 he worked for the Austrian radio, first as the musical director of operetta performances, and later also as the designer of entertainment programs with his own orchestra. From 1933 he was director of the newly founded radio orchestra of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra . As such, he gained international fame through many programs on Viennese music that were also broadcast throughout Europe. In 1938 he was removed from his position by the National Socialists as a Catholic converted from Judaism and emigrated to the Netherlands. There he found a job with the VARA Orchestra and was able to continue his profession (to a limited extent) during the occupation. Josef Holzer was no longer allowed to return to his homeland. He died in Hilversum in 1946.
