The Canchayllo District is located in the Jauja Province in the Junín Region in southwest-central Peru . The district was established on October 15, 1954. It has an area of ​​947 km². At the 2017 census, 1601 people lived in the Canchayllo district. In 1993 the population was 1894, in 2007 it was 1774. The administrative center is the town of Canchayllo with 797 inhabitants located on the Río Pachacayo at an altitude of 3609  m (as of 2017). Canchayllo is located 24 km west of the provincial capital Jauja . The only larger town next to the main town Canchayllo is San Juan de Pachacayo with 407 inhabitants, located at the confluence of the Río Pachacayo into the Río Mantaro .

Geographical location

The Canchayllo district is located in the Andean highlands in the west of the Jauja province. The district extends over the catchment area of the Río Pachacayo. It extends from the main ridge of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the west to the Río Mantaro in the northeast. The district lies almost entirely within the reserve Reserva paisajística Nor Yauyos-Cochas . The mountains Tunshu ( 5660  m ) and Nevado Pariacaca ( 5758  m ) rise on the western border of the district .

The Canchayllo district borders in the southeast on the district of San José de Quero ( province of Concepción ), in the southwest on the districts of Yauyos and Tanta (both in the province of Yauyos ), in the west on the district of San Lorenzo de Quinti ( province of Huarochirí ), in the north to the districts of Suitucancha and Chacapalpa (both in the province of Yauli ) and to the east to the districts of Curicaca , Llocllapampa and Sincos .
