Location of the districts

The province of Yauyos is one of the nine provinces of Lima on the Pacific coast of Peru . The province has an area of ​​6901.58 km². In the 2017 census, the population was 20,463, 10 years earlier it was 27,501. The administrative seat of the province is Yauyos .

Geographical location

The province of Yauyos is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera 130 km southeast of the state capital Lima . It extends over the upper catchment area of the Río Cañete . Furthermore, in the north-west of the province lies an approximately 12 km long section of the Río Mala and the river valley of the Río Ayavirí , a left tributary of the Río Mala. In the southwest of the province is also the upper river valley of the Río Omas . In the east, the watershed that runs along the Western Cordillera forms the provincial border. The province of Yauyos borders the province of Huarochirí to the north, the Junín and Huancavelica region to the east, the Ica province to the south and the Cañete province to the west . In the province there is the protected landscape area "Reserva Paisajística Nor Yauyos Cochas" (221,268 ha).

The two indigenous languages ​​of the province are Yauyos-Quechua (according to the 2007 Census about 800 speakers, 3.2%) and Jaqaru (about 740 speakers, 3.0%), both of which are mostly only spoken by older people and therefore in theirs Are very endangered. For Jaqaru, however, there has been a project of intercultural bilingual education since 2013 .
