The Río Mala is an approximately 123 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the southwest of Peru in the provinces of Huarochirí , Yauyos and Cañete in the south of the administrative region Lima .
River course
The Río Mala has its source in the Peruvian Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 3850 m , 95 km east of the state capital Lima . Initially it flows mainly in a southerly direction through the mountains. It passes the villages of Huarochirí and San Lorenzo de Quinti . At river kilometer 68 the Río Ayavirí , the most important tributary of the Río Mala, flows into the river from the left. Then the Río Mala turns to the southwest. It finally flows into the Pacific Ocean near the small town of Mala . On the lower 20 kilometers, irrigated agriculture is practiced in the river valley of the Río Mala.
Catchment area and hydrology
The catchment area of the Río Mala covers an area of 2476 km². The Río Lurín runs further north and the Río Cañete further south . The catchment area extends in the east to the mountains Nevado Ticlla and Llongote . The mean discharge at the La Capilla gauge , 29 km above the estuary, is 14.8 m³ / s. The river system is mainly fed by precipitation that falls between December and April in the higher elevations of the catchment area.
