The Río Cañete is an approximately 225 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the central west of Peru in the Lima region .

River course

The Río Cañete has its origin in the approximately 4440  m high glacial rim lake Laguna Ticllacocha at the foot of the 5897  m high Nevado Ticlla in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The upper 80 kilometers the river runs within the reserve Reserva paisajística Nor Yauyos-Cochas . The Río Cañete initially flows almost 20 kilometers north. Between river kilometers 210 and 204 the river flows through the dammed lake Laguna Paucarcocha ( ). The Río Cañete then turns east about 10 km before turning south. Several elongated smaller lakes lie between river kilometers 185 and 170 along the course of the river. The Río Cañete cuts through the mountain range of the Western Cordillera in a southerly direction, from river kilometer 80 in a southwesterly direction. In the last 16 kilometers, the Río Cañete crosses the desert-like coastal plain and finally flows into the Pacific Ocean 140 km south-southeast of the Peruvian capital Lima . The town of San Vicente de Cañete is 5 km north of the estuary. The Panamericana crosses the Río Cañete 1000 m above the mouth. 10 km above the mouth there is a weir ( ), where an irrigation canal branches off to the north.

The route of the Río Cañete is followed by the Ruta Nacional PE-24 (San Vicente de Cañete– Huancayo ) from 150 km . 25 km above the estuary, the forest reserve Bosque de protección Aledaño a la Bocatoma del Canal Nuevo Imperial is located on the course of the Río Cañete. Several smaller villages are located on the middle and lower river courses. Along this, agriculture is carried out on irrigated cultivation areas.

Use of hydropower

The El Platanal hydropower plant , which was completed in 2010, is located at river kilometer 65 . This is supplied with water from the Capillucas dam, 27 km upstream, via an underground pipeline.
