The province of Barranca is one of 9 provinces of the administrative region Lima on the Pacific coast of Peru. It extends over an area of 1355.87 km². The population is around 145,000 (as of 2017). In the census in 1993 the population was 114,051, in 2007 it was 133,904. The administrative seat of the province is Barranca . There are several well-known archaeological sites in the province, including Caral .
Geographical location
The province borders in the north on the provinces Huarmey and Bolognesi (Ancash), in the east on the province Ocros (Ancash) and in the south on the province Huaura . To the west is the Pacific Ocean .
The province, located about 175 km northwest of the capital Lima , is centrally traversed by the River Pativilca . The north of the province is traversed by the Río Fortaleza , the south of the province by the Río Supe . The province extends only 45 km inland. The upper reaches of the rivers are in the neighboring provinces. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the coastal lowlands.
