The province of Cajatambo is one of 9 provinces of Lima on the Pacific coast of Peru. The province has an area of ​​1,515.2 km². At the 2017 census there were 6,559 people living in the province. In 1993 the population was 9475, in 2007 8358. The administrative center is the small town of Cajatambo

Geographical location

The province is located 175 km north of the state capital Lima in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . It extends over the river valleys of Río Rapay and Río Gorgor , both left tributaries of the Río Pativilca . In the west, the provincial border runs along the middle reaches of the Río Pativilca. The glaciated Cordillera Huayhuash ridge rises to the east . The province borders in the north on the province of Ocros and the province of Bolognesi ( Ancash ), in the east on the province Lauricocha ( Huánuco ), in the south on the province Oyón and in the west on the province Huaura .
