The district of Cajatambo is located in the province of Cajatambo in the Lima region of western Peru . The district was founded on February 12, 1826. It has an area of 552 km². The 2017 census counted 2221 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3846, in 2007 it was 2790. The district administration is located in the provincial capital of Cajatambo, at an altitude of 3376 m , with a population of 1,355 (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The district of Cajatambo is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the east of the province of Cajatambo. The Río Rapay, left tributary of the Río Pativilca , flows westward along the northern district boundary and drains much of the district. The extreme southeast of the district lies in the upper catchment area of the Río Gorgor, also a left tributary of the Río Pativilca. In the northeast, the district extends to the partially glaciated mountain range Cordillera Huayhuash with the continental divide .
The district of Cajatambo is bordered to the west by the district of Huancapon , to the northwest and to the north by the district of Copa , to the northeast by the district of Jésus , to the east by the district of San Miguel de Cauri (both of the aforementioned districts are in the province of Lauricocha ) and to the southeast to the district of Oyón ( Province of Oyón ) and to the south to the district of Gorgor .
