The Copa district is located in the Cajatambo province in the Lima region of western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 205 km². The 2017 census counted 924 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1292, in 2007 it was 990. The district administration is located in the 3410 m high town of Copa with 364 inhabitants (as of 2017). Copa is 13 km northwest of the provincial capital Cajatambo . Besides Copa, the only other larger town is Huayllapa with 403 inhabitants.
Geographical location
The Copa district is located on the western flank of the Western Peruvian Cordillera in the north of the Cajatambo province. The Río Rapay, left tributary of the Río Pativilca , and its upper reaches the Río Huayllapa flow along the southern district boundary to the west and drain the area. The district extends in the far west to its confluence with the Río Pativilca. In the east, the district extends to the partially glaciated mountain range Cordillera Huayhuash with the continental divide .
The Copa district borders in the northwest on the Mangas district , in the north on the Pacllón district (both in the Bolognesi province ), in the east on the Jesús district ( Lauricocha province ), in the southeast and in the south on the Cajatambo district and in the southwest on the Huancapón District .
