River course
The Río Pativilca flows through the administrative region of Ancash and the extreme north of the administrative region Lima , about 165 km north of the state capital Lima . The Río Pativilca rises in the north of the Cordillera Huallanca at an altitude of about 4800 m . It initially flows 95 km in a predominantly south-south-west direction through the mountains. It takes on the tributaries Río Rapay and Río Gorgor , both from the left. The river then turns towards the west-southwest. At river kilometer 45 the Río Ocros meets the Río Pativilca coming from the north. Its river valley widens from river kilometer 25. The Río Pativilca finally flows into the sea 4 km northwest of the city of Barranca . The Panamericana crosses the river 3.7 km above the mouth .
Catchment area and hydrology
The Río Pativilca drains an area of about 4670 km². The catchment area is bounded in the east by the Cordillera Huayhuash and Cordillera Huallanca ridges. In the north, the catchment area extends to the southern end of the Cordillera Blanca . The lower river valley of the Río Patvilca forms the southern border of the Cordillera Negra . The discharge fluctuates very strongly over the course of the year. During the rainy season from January to May, the river carries the largest amounts of water.
Use of hydropower
The Cahua hydropower plant is located at river kilometer 60 on the left bank of the Río Pativilca. 10 kilometers upstream, part of the river water is diverted at a weir and fed to the power plant via an underground water pipe.
