The Huancapón district is located in the Cajatambo Province in the Lima region of western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​150 km². The 2017 census counted 1052 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1624, in 2007 it was 1225. The district administration is located in the 3145  m high village of Huancapón with 373 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huancapón is located 15 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Cajatambo .

Geographical location

The district of Huancapón is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the central west of the province of Cajatambo. The district is bordered to the west by the Río Pativilca, which flows south, and to the north and south by its left tributaries, the Río Rapay and Río Gorgor.

The district of Huancapón borders in the west on the district Carhuapampa ( province Ocros ), in the north on the district Copa , in the east on the district Cajatambo , in the southeast on the district Gorgor and in the south-west on the district Manás .
