Jean-Claude Bonato (born March 23, 1946 in Hayange ) is a retired French basketball player .

career

Bonato, a two-meter indoor player, spent almost his entire basketball career at Olympique d'Antibes , playing for the club from 1963 to 1979. 1980/81 he was in the service of Nice UC. In 1970 he became French champion with Antibes. He scored a total of 15,248 points in the French league, which was the best at the time of his retirement. His season high was an average of 27.7 points per encounter (1966/67). Bonato came in seven seasons in the French league on averages of more than 25 points per game, in four others of more than 20 per game. In 1969 he was voted French basketball player of the year.

Between 1963 and 1976 he played 172 international matches for France, in which he posted an average of 12.3 points. In 1963, 1965, 1967, 1971 and 1973 he took part in the European Championship finals. At the European Championship in 1973, Bonato was the fifth-best scorer of the tournament with 17.4 points per encounter.

His son Yann Bonato is also a former national basketball player.
